Nina has always been a music junkie, whose obsession started
in her teenage years. She was into heavy metal bands like
Pantera and Slayer, but after high school her musical tastes
began to broaden and she started to listen to more industrial
sounds like Ministry and Nine Inch Nails. This led her into
even more electronic sounds like the Beastie Boys and Portishead.
Her ears were open to a new genre after going to her first
party in 1994. After that she crossed over into techno and
house music. Her most memorable parties were Earth 1995, Icehouse,
and Quad Cities Reprazent.
In l998, she started helping a local Dallas crew, 32 Degrees.
She worked with the burgeoning crew at Decibel and helped
with the events they coordinated. In the process, Kim and
Nina tossed around the idea of starting a production company
which eventually came under the name "Real-time Syndicate".
Real-time has to do with many aspects of music production.
A syndicate is a group of people with a common goal. Real-time
Syndicate was born and in November of 1999, with the support
of many other scenesters, they pulled off an event called
"A Room of Our Own". The event featured 2 rooms
of all female djs with all different genres represented including
techno, drum and bass, house, trance, hardcore, and breaks.
The event was a success and after that, Toyacoyah and Aya
joined the group as well. Their vision was to provide a platform
for digital artists to express themselves and since then that
is exactly what they have done.
In 2001 Nina helped organize events at Carribean Red in order
to expose many genres of music including drum and bass, house, and goa. After the closing of Carribean
Red, Nina took over bookings at Sub-tronic Theatre, a night
devoted to exposing live electronic acts in Texas and the
surrounding areas. Currently Nina is booking DJs and live
PAs for the monthly event. For over a year, she has been writing
the Dallas scene report in Feedback Magazine, a quarterly
zine dedicated to Texas electronic music.
