In 97, 2 years after she arrived in the US from Japan, DJ
Meow discovered house music and the party scene.
I
started to go to parties in San Antonio, TX where I went to
school. I loved the small parties with good house DJs there
so much because Id never been so alive like I was on
the dance floor. Soon enough she started to pay attention
to what DJs were actually doing on the decks. It was
when DJ RISE, Deepfeel, and Mike Angel played at a club, I
was watching them mixing and looked up the crowd. It gave
me chill on my skin to see how they totally controlled peoples
feelings and the mood of the entire club so strongly. The
groove was so intense. Her 1st trip to NYC in winter
97 to check out club scene blew her mind. She
saw Tony Humphries and Mateo and Matos. I felt overwhelmed
by their mixing and peoples reaction. The whole night,
I was in house heaven.
After buying many house CDs for a year, DJ Meow bought her
first turntables and a mixer and records.
I bought them with money which I was supposed to buy
flight tickets to go back to Japan for summer ;) I was so
hooked on mixing in my room that I always forgot to do anything
even to eat. 3 months later, in September 98, she played
out for the 1st time at her friends party. DJ Meow had
a small residency on Wednesdays in Spring 99, and in May she
had her 1st out-of-town gig in Dallas, TX with Fink Prod.
which later became to infamous Valence Entertainment. She
joined the DJ crew, Liquid Underground, from Kileen, TX. Liquid
Underground is collective of talented young DJs and its
so amazing how they work hard and have strong followers! In
a few years, they will take over the scene thats for
sure.
In early summer 2000, she finished school, decided to move
to Austin, TX, her all time favorite party city. I
used to drive 3 hour-round-trip just to see DJs like Coy West,
Thomas Sahs, Merrick Brown, Dave Barker and Dallas househeads
like Demarkus, Cle, and Mike Constantino . I just didnt
want to miss any part of good house music.
Soon
she hooked up with www.blastro.com,
and started to play on Beatfreq. Ive had so much
fun playing with all different DJs on the show, in-store events,
and hang out with very talented crew. Blastro is like my after-school
club. It gave me a sense of being dedicated to DJing for the
1st time. Also, through Blastro, DJ Meow joined several
commercial projects with Suka on a local broadcast program,
Austin Music Network.
She
is also the newest member of Realtime Syndicate as she joined
KC, Nina, and Toyacoyah. All of us work hard for love
of music and fun. Im proud of being one of them as we
share our passion. Its always good to have great sistas
by me!
Her
biggest step as a DJ was when Thomas Sahs asked her to join
his nights at the new club, Texutre (www.textureaustin.com).
Along with Thomas and Joey Foley, she plays every Friday night
at Fiz. Three of us clicked perfectly at
a minute I joined them. Thomass hard work for our night,
wicked mixing (Man, Im a big fan of Thomas for years!),
great ideas, and Joeys great over all experience as
a DJ, brilliant skills on the decks, deep knoweldge of house
music (Hes a house music library), and I. We deeply
respect each other for true love of house music and Fiz and
we share these with our crowd... this is the best thing ever
happened to me as a DJ. Catch her sets at Fiz every
Friday!
